MLK Day of Service
Four Lenoir-Rhyne University students spent Saturday morning volunteering in the Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry Thrift Store warehouse as part of the national Martin Luther King Day of Service. A total of 30 LRU students volunteered at six sites in the Hickory area through the university and AmeriCorps.
The national MLK Day of Service was started by former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis, who co-authored the King Holiday and Service Act. The Federal legislation challenges Americans to transform the King Holiday into a day of volunteer service in honor of Dr. King, and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on August 23, 1994.
Pictured in the photo below are, L-R: Michelle Barnes, Thrift Store Manager, and LRU students Rachel Birkedal; LeQuan McCorkle; Billy Siezega and LeBrandon Banner.
